Residents Urge Reopening of Waste Facilities to Aid Kodungaiyur Landfill

Residents Urge Reopening of Waste Facilities to Aid Kodungaiyur Landfill

Community groups advocate for the re-establishment of microcomposting centres and material recovery units in North Chennai.

North Chennai residents are pressing local authorities to reactivate microcomposting centres (MCCs) and material recovery facilities (MRFs) throughout the area. This collective appeal aims to significantly reduce the mounting pressure on the Kodungaiyur landfill, which continues to bear a substantial portion of the city’s waste.

Community associations underscore the importance of these decentralised waste management units in promoting effective waste segregation and processing at the local level. By converting organic waste into compost and recovering valuable recyclables, MCCs and MRFs can drastically decrease the volume of refuse destined for the already overburdened Kodungaiyur site, thereby extending its operational life and mitigating adverse environmental effects.

Beyond the call for reopening these facilities, residents have also expressed strong opposition to large-scale waste processing projects. They are demanding the permanent shutdown of the existing 50-tonne incinerator at Kodungaiyur, citing environmental and health concerns. Furthermore, there is a unified plea to abandon the proposed 2,100-tonne waste-to-energy plant, advocating instead for more sustainable and community-focused waste solutions.

This initiative reflects a broader desire among residents for a paradigm shift towards an environmentally conscious and decentralised approach to waste management, with the goal of fostering cleaner localities and reducing the ecological impact of urban waste disposal.
