Critical pre-monsoon work aims to enhance drainage and mitigate potential flooding in the city.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has commenced desilting operations along the Mambalam Canal, a crucial step in the city’s preparedness strategy for the upcoming North-East Monsoon. This proactive measure is designed to improve the canal’s carrying capacity and ensure efficient water flow, thereby reducing the risk of waterlogging and flooding in surrounding areas.
Officials from the civic body stated that the desilting work involves removing accumulated silt, debris, and waste materials that obstruct the natural flow of water. Such blockages can significantly impede drainage during heavy rainfall, leading to inundation in low-lying localities.
Chennai, being particularly vulnerable to the intense downpours characteristic of the North-East Monsoon, relies heavily on well-maintained storm water drains and canals. The timely clearing of waterways like the Mambalam Canal is considered essential to safeguard residents and infrastructure from monsoon-related challenges.
